As the 2024 school year officially comes into our rear view, our summer must sadly come to an end. But on the bright side, at least last summer was a blast!
Starting with movies, Deadpool and Wolverine did amazing in the box office. It became the only R-rated movie to acquire more than 200 million dollars in its opening weekend, surpassing The Joker and reaching over one-billion dollars in the box-office worldwide. Another summer smash hit, Twisters, was definitely a fan favorite! The movie had plenty of well-known actors like Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.
Olympics: France edition
The summer Olympics happened. The U.S. and China ended up tied at 40 for the most gold medals earned this year. Plus, this year they introduced a new event, breakdancing, in which Canada took the first ever breakdancing gold medal! Skateboarding was also new this year, with Japan taking the gold. This year in the gymnastics floor event, Brazil took the gold medal. Rebeca Andrade mentioned the possibility of this being her last Olympic event, which means this may, sadly, be her last gold medal.
Important things in summer 2024
In other news, President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 election after his poor performance at the presidential debate with former president Donald Trump. Speaking of Donlad Trump, a rally in Pennsylvania came to a halt when shots were fired at the former president! Unfortunately, multiple people were injured and few passed away in the incident.
If you were trying to fly somewhere this summer, let’s hope your plane wasn’t running on a Microsoft computer! Late last summer, the entirety of Microsoft’s systems went down, meaning a lot of planes couldn’t take off. If that wasn’t disruptive enough, 9-1-1 lines were down, and everything else that runs on Microsoft stopped working (which is a lot more than you think it is)! A lot of people speculated that it got hacked, but Microsoft never confirmed nor denied the reason services ceased.
There is no denying that last summer was an eventful one. Through international sporting competitions, cyber-struggles and near-assassinations, this will be one for the books. Regardless, school is back in session and though few are particularly excited we can only hope this school year is as eventful as the summer (but maybe safer).
