The box office smash hit, Transformers: One is finally out! This truly incredible film was officially the best performing Transformers movie to date! But it wasn’t without its flaws… and I’m here to talk about the good parts and the imperfections.
Now at first glance, judging by this movie’s star-studded cast; such as Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johanson, Brian Tyree Henry, and Keegan-Micheal Key it seems like your typical new mediocre animated reboot, ( like the Mario movie, the Garfield Movie, and Despicable Me 4) but unlike those, this movie is surprisingly incredible!
Chris Hemsworth did surprisingly amazing in this movie! You could really tell the difference in his voice between the young, naive, troublesome Orion Pax and the fearless leader of the Autobots Optimus Prime. I also do really love the unique take on Orion Pax. How he is mischievous & always getting into trouble, but he still has a good heart (like every main character ever). Plus, given the relatively short run time of this movie, the character arc isn’t that abrupt!
Speaking of abrupt character changes, Megatron’s character arc felt kind of sudden, because a very shocking event happened in the movie and it feels like his entire character arc happened in 3 minutes. Now there was definitely reasons for his change, but it felt too abrupt. But because of Brian Tyree Henry’s amazing performance, the Megatron we all know is still there!
Also, due to this movie’s star-studded cast, some of the characters are overshadowed by their iconic voice actors. For instance, Bumblebee, one of, if not the most famous character in Transformers, was played by Keegan-Micheal Key. He sadly gets overshadowed by the fact that he is voiced by the famed actor, known for his various roles in other media as the lovable comic relief.

And the villains were incredible! By the end of the movie, Megatron was the character everyone knows him to be (partly thanks to Brian Tyree Henry’s amazing performance, I seriously can’t say enough how much I loved how he played him) The Quintisons were kind of just not really involved in the movie that much other than “a big scary looming threat that we don’t want to focus on right now”. But Sentinel Prime was an amazing villain! I loved how we thought he was a good leader, but he was secretly orchestrating everything that is heard, everything that is seen, and everything that happens in Iacon. Despite being the villain, he was a really cool character to watch. And once you know he is the villain, he makes every scene he is in 5 times better. Plus, he is played by Jon Hamm! (The cast for this movie is actually incredible)
Unlike other transformers movies that just dedicate the beginning 20 minutes of the movie to the humans. They have a 10-minute “intro”, and they just get right into it. Once you get to the Iacon 5000, it’s all uphill from there. And l can’t express enough how much the actors chosen for these roles made this movie so much better. Yes, there were obviously some questionable choices like Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime/ Orion Pax, Steve Buscemi as Starscream, and Keegan-Micheal Key as Bumblebee, but they didn’t bring the movie down that much! There was just some room for improvment!
( Ok there are no more spoilers from here on out)
Aside from the negative things, this movie in my opinion is a really good 9/10. The plot of the movie is really easy to follow, and the characters are really interesting! Plus, if there are any die hard Transformers fans who are going to see this movie, there are niche little references they make to many different things in the continuity that you will enjoy! (And this is coming from someone who is a diehard Transformers fan) I especially liked how a lot of the background characters were actual characters from different shows & movies, that you could point out if you knew who they were!
Overall, it’s just a fun movie to watch! The action is super cool, the humor lands really well, and the last third of this movie just hits. And I think this is a movie that is worth (at least in my opinion) a few watches because it’s just non-stop fun.
